Kevin will work hard to ensure all our children have a quality education to prepare them for the 21st century.
- Smaller Class Sizes; Parents and Teachers agree that smaller class sizes result in increased student learning. Research shows small classes in Kindergarten through third grade is essential to increasing student learning.
- Expand Arts and Music; Kevin was a percussionist in Concert Band and Marching Band and knows as an educator the research that affirms music and art help students do better in other core classes.
- Protect Student Programs;Our children need nurses and counselors to thrive.
- Expand Career Technical Programs and electives to ensure students more opportunities to succeed.
- Community Based Education; We must ensure schools have the freedom and resources to meet the individual needs of their students to ensure success. Parents, Teachers, Principals and other stakeholders ought to have more local control to help their students succeed.
- Transparent Finances; District and Site Budgets and spending must be open and transparent. Voters need to know how their money is being used to provide for a quality education for our children.
- Open Budget Committee; All stakeholders ought to have a role in the budget committee process and be able to participate equally. With a more collaborative process of support staff, teachers, parents, community leaders, principals and finance department we can work to carefully evaluate line by line opportunities to reduce expenses and increase revenue. We also ought to evaluate every contract with the district to identify opportunities to lower expenses.
- Prevent Layoffs; We must leave no stone unturned and explore strategies to identify savings and increase revenue to allocate resources directly to the classroom and preserve small class sizes and a positive and safe learning environment for all our children.
- Open Door Policy; We must create an environment of servant leadership where the school board works to serve educators so that they can more effectively accomplish their goals of increasing student learning. I see my role as to help work collaboratively with parents, teachers and other stake holders to solve problems and address their issues for the betterment of our children.
- Zero Based Budgeting; True Zero Based budgeting begins in the class room and school site to identify non-negotiable essential functions required to provide our children a quality education. Then, work out from the classroom to identify legally required operations and support services for our school district. Everything else must be evaluated line by line to assess its efficacy and how it relates to the needs of students. We must examine every contract and work with every vendor to lower costs, we must explore direct sourcing of supplies and in-sourcing of jobs to save money.
- Strategic Plan; To clearly understand the common goals of our school district, we must articulate a clear vision and then build a strategic plan to ensure all our efforts and decisions are in the pursuit of excellence in education. Strategic Planning Committees ought to include all the various stakeholders, especially parents, support staff, teachers, principals, business and community leaders and students. Working in collaboration to pursue our common goal will greatly benefit our children.
